About Legionnaires disease
This disease is a form of pneumonia caused by the inhalation of water droplets contaminated with bacteria belonging to the legionellaceae family. There are over 200 confimed cases of the disease in the UK with many undiagnosed. These bacteria are present naturally in rivers, ponds and streams. They can proliferate to dangerous levels in man-made environments, especially in water systems containing sludge and scale where the temperature is between 20-40 degrees C.
